THE penultimate round of fixtures in the La Hogue Fordham and District Midweek League saw Exning, Burwell and Worlington consolidate their positions and qualify for the knockout phase of the competition.
However, Godolphin's defeat at the hands of Worlington left them sweating on the outcome of the final matches to be certain of qualification.
The semi-final line-up will be decided after the final round of matches last night, with a number of possibilities still remaining.
For the second week running, Godolphin's Stanley House side went up against a top-four rival and were comprehensively beaten by nine wickets at Worlington.
Batting first, Godolphin took the game to the hosts with Vincent Fernandes (66) and Chanzeb (32) both finding runs.
But the Worlington attack never let them dominate and the final total of 140-7, although competitive, was probably 20 runs short on a lightning fast outfield.
In response, Matthew Peachey (87no) and Chris Baugh (49) exploited the conditions with an opening partnership of 110.
Baugh's wicket was the visitors' only success, with the winning runs coming with two overs to spare.
EXNING won by the same margin at Tuddenham, where the home side had the consolation of gaining a bonus point as James McKinney (41) and Richard Cross (25) guided them to 124-9.
The league leaders had four overs in hand as Graham Cole (31no) and Tim Catley (52no) eased them to victory to extend their lead to three points.
BURWELL moved into second place with a 26-run win at Fordham, which ended the home side's last hopes of a semi-final place.
Garthik Sivabalan's dashing 91 was the backbone of the Burwell target of 163-6, which Fordham chipped away at through Gavin Harding (37) and Mark Abbott (27), assisted by some 27 wides from the Burwell bowlers.
THE game of the evening, however, was at Chippenham where the home side kept alive their slim hopes of qualification with an exciting last ball win over Gazeley.
The visitors belied their lowly position by setting a stiff target of 155-2 thanks almost entirely to a magnificent unbeaten 119 from 16-year-old Ben Shepperson.
Chippenham's reply was also dominated by one man with Joe Heather making 106 not out as the scores were level with just two balls left.
Unfortunately for Chippenham, Heather had lost the strike and young Tom Allen took a wicket with the penultimate ball only for Chippenham skipper Paul Fishpool to scamper a leg bye off the last delivery to secure victory.
