BURWELL returned to winning ways with a comfortable victory over Hunts & Cambs Premier League bottom side Godmanchester in a rain-disrupted match at Mingay Park.
Having won the toss and elected to bow,l Burwell started poorly as 12 runs were scored from the first four deliveries before Merrick Fuller had the opposition captain caught at fine leg after top-edging an attempted pull shot.
A flurry of runs continued with the new ball despatched to all parts as Godmanchester racked up 66 from the first 12 overs.
With Ben Cross struggling to bowl with a back injury, Burwell removed Fuller from the attack and the slower-paced bowling of Bissett (16-1-4-65) and James Craig (10-0-2-31) caused Godmanchester problems as the ball moved substantially off a pitch livened up by a heavy shower.
By the time Adam Huckle was bought into the attack in the 32nd over, Godmanchester had reached 139-7 and Burwell on top knowing their final target would be reduced following the rain interruption.
However, Burwell knew that in order to have a chance of a maximum 25-point victory, all 10 wickets would need to be taken and Huckle (8-4-2-12) and the re-introduction of Fuller (7.2-0-2-36) ensured this happened with just 10 balls remaining as the tail wagged and took the visitors' score up to 190 all out.
At the tea interval the umpires confirmed that the revised target would be 91 off 24 overs with Burwell having to forfeit four wickets – Fuller, Bissett, Henry James and Andy Knight being the unfortunate ones.
Ben Cross was promoted to a pinch hitting role but departed early, bringing James Craig (31 not out) together with Grant Flower (45).
Together, they took Burwell to the brink of victory before Dan Jones (4 not out) joined Craig, who clinched the win in the grand manner with a fine shot over square leg for six with 16 balls remaining.
On Saturday, Burwell travel to Granta as they attempt to keep the pressure on division leaders Nassington.
