GREEN-fingered residents are being called upon to help set up an allotment and gardening association in Soham.
Town councillor Nigel Driver is hoping to form the new group at a special meeting on Monday, July 7, but needs at least 10 people to put their names forward.

Cllr Driver, who is spearheading the initiative on behalf of Soham Town Council, said: "O
nce an association is formed you get a lot more power and there is money available from different schemes that will help people. For example, if you want to get water on an allotment the association will find out about this."

If the Soham Association and Leisure Gardening Association is formed members will be able to buy cheap seeds and garden sundries as well as organic fruit and vegetables.

People do not have to own an allotment to join the group, which would be part of a national allotment and gardening society.

Cllr Driver said residents would not have to pay extra for their allotment plots if the initiative went ahead.

"Once a few people get on board, hopefully they will feel the benefits," he said.

Monday's meeting will be held at Soham's Walter Gidney Pavilion at 7.30pm.

Guest speaker will be Karen Kenny, eastern region representative of the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardens, who will give a talk on the benefits of an association.

Anyone is welcome to attend.
