PLANS for a purpose-built Scout and Guide hut in Soham were rejected by councillors last night because they did not like its appearance.
Although members of East Cambridgeshire Council's planning committee supported the plans by the Soham troop for a new two-storey building, they agreed the design needed a re-think.

"It's an awful building," said Cllr Peter Moakes. "It seems a shame to be putting a building with such little attraction in a public park."

These views were echoed by Cllr Jackie Petts. "I do agree the building is hideous," she said. "But I think the work they are doing there is so excellent we have got to give them some leeway."

Cllr Mike Rouse supported the plans, adding: "I say it's good for Soham, good for the Scout movement and good for the young people of the town."

Soham Scouts and Guides will now be working with the planning officer to re-design the exterior of the building before re-submitting the plans, hopefully within the next three months.
