ELY'S historic magistrates' court could close because officials say it is not being used enough.
A review of rural courts has recommends the closure of courts in Ely, Mildenhall and Sudbury.

Pauline Cornford, area director of Her Majesty's Court Service for Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk, said the review of local court services began last year and an internal report had been published on Friday.

According to the report Ely court is an "under utilised asset that should be disposed of."

It is estimated that closure of the court would save £191,000 a year.

But Kathy Bradney, a former chairman of the bench at the grade II-listed courthouse, condemned the closure plan, saying: "It will be the end of local justice. My main concern is for people who will have to travel to other cities."
