A YOUTH football club in Soham is appealing for help to find its own permanent ground.
Soham Town Colts use football pitches at a number of venues in the area, including Soham Village College, St Andrew's Primary School, The Weatheralls School and Wicken recreation ground.

But the club is desperately seeking a home of its own where
its nine teams can regularly train and play home matches.

Members have emailed Donna Martin, chairman of Soham Town Forum, asking if anyone has a piece of land which they could use.

"We have people training all over the county," said Heather Smart, club secretary.

"Everybody goes all over the place. One team plays at Wicken, there's a team at St Andrew's, another at The Weatheralls. As a club, we don't have a sense of identity.

"We are always reliant on people's goodwill, with them letting us carry on using their pitches."

Although the Colts are keen to apply for grants to establish their own clubhouse and changing facilities, the club needs to find a site to develop.

Mrs Smart said they had approached Soham Town Council in the past about the possibility of using Angle Common, only to be told it was an area of beauty and football pitches would spoil the land.

"If we had a home of our own, then we could look for grant money," she said.

"It's a catch-22 as until we find somewhere we cannot ask for funding. It's frustrating."

The club has been looking for a base for a number of years. The Journal ran a story four years ago appealing for help but received no response.

Anyone who has land they could allow the Colts to use should contact Heather Smart on 07810 886740.
