RETIRED bricklayer Ernest William Marsh, of Carter Road, Burwell, died at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge on February 8. He was 81.
Born in Burwell, Mr Marsh was educated at the village schools before working at Townsend's nursery at Fordham until joining the Army for his two years of National Service.
As a bricklayer, he worked for Fuller and Blackwell in Burwell and Johnson
and Bailey in Cambridge before going self-employed.
The final 12 years of his working life was spent as a maintenance man for Forest Heath Council.
Keen on football, he followed Arsenal and during his younger days played for Burwell Swifts. He also enjoyed gardening.
Mr Marsh is survived by his wife Cynthia – the couple were married for 59 years. Their only child, Stephen, died in 1981, aged 27. The funeral service was held at the West Suffolk Crematorium at Risby on February 24 when the Rev Graham Locking officiated.
