West Suffolk Hospital says it has managed to carry out some of the routine operations cancelled ahead of today’s proposed junior doctors’ strike.

Like many hospitals, it had cancelled about 20 routine operations for the strike day, which was called off yesterday after the Health Secretary agreed to talks.

A hospital spokeswoman said: “The numbers haven’t yet been verified. We did cancel a small number of routine operations but have been able to reinstate some patients this afternoon. The remainder will be rebooked as quickly as possible.

“We have an excellent relationship with our junior doctors, and worked closely with them and our consultants before the planned industrial action to put contingency plans in place. This would have allowed us to minimise disruption while continuing to provide a safe, effective service if the strike had gone ahead.

“We are pleased that the two sides are in discussion and hope they can come to an agreement.”
