Tributes have been paid to the former Newmarket MP Sir Eldon Griffiths who has died aged 89 less than a year after he became one of Britain’s oldest bridegrooms.

Sir Eldon, who was Conservative MP for the Bury St Edmunds constituency, which included Newmarket, from 1964 to 1992, died in the early hours of Tuesday.

Last July he married for the third time at the age of 88 to American authoress Susan Donnell. He had a son and a daughter with his first wife, Sigrid and in 1985 he married Betty Stannard, who predeceased him. During his political career he was a junior minister for environment and sport in Edward Heath’s government and was a Parliamentary spokesman for the Police Federation. His son, Cllr John Griffiths, leader of St Edmundsbury Borough Council, said: “My father was an exceptional man and enjoyed an extraordinarily full, and active life to the very end.”

Current Newmarket MP Matthew Hancock said: “For nearly 30 years, Sir Eldon was an extraordinary political figure who made his mark both here in West Suffolk and elsewhere in the world. He has left behind a great legacy.
