A FIVE-YEAR-OLD girl who was hit by a car outside a Newmarket school on Tuesday afternoon is “recovering well”.

The youngster was knocked down in Rowley Drive at around 3.15pm and suffered a broken pelvis.

The Journal understands the accident happened as a car was turning off the main road into Black Bear Lane.

An air ambulance was sent to the scene and landed in Newmarket College’s playing fields, but the girl was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge by road.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk County Council, the local education authority, said the girl was “recovering well”.

She added: “The young girl walked down the school’s driveway and got on to the main road after running between parked cars.”

i would just like to say i hope the girl is well and recovering, but will the school give the parents lessons in how to teach there children to cross the road, as the person before pointed out, a child ran out the month before, Its the job of the parents to teach your children road safety, as a mum of a 7 year old myself, i have explained to my child why running out in the road is dangerous and to walk with me in car parks because revesing cars can't see small children. PLEASE PARENTS TEACH YOUR CHILDEN ROADS ARE DANGEROUS, its your responsibility, next time the car may not be turning and going slow and be a lot worse,

Really am not surpised, accident waiting to happen! Emailed head before complaining about cars parking on zig-zags,droppingpicking up,even taxis. A child ran into the road before christmas and just stood there, oblivious to people shouting at him to stand still, while someone stopped the traffice so he could get to the pavement!! With the extra children now attending the school, due to our middle schools closing at the end of the summer term, this is an issue that needs attention, even more so NOW. Hope the child make's a speedy recovery
