Action resumed after the Christmas break with a host of matches taking place in the Newmarket Journal Handicap Cup.
NCI visited Soham Comrades II and the evening kicked off with a long match between Comrades’ Bela Szabo (nine-point handicap) and Howard Morley (eight), with Morley taking it in three legs.
Comrades responded through Robin Wallis (seven) beating Peter Moffatt (four) and Kin Choi Chan (eight) defeating Kelvin Mitchell (seven).
However, NCI continued to press and Moffatt beat Szabo in two and Mitchell beat Wallis, again in two.
Chan completed his maximum for Comrades defeating Morley and Moffatt..
Szabo completed a disappointing evening losing to Mitchell in three, but Wallis beat Morley in two, leaving Chan’s maximum and Wallis’ two just shading it for Comrades.
Ely III were able to field only two players for their second-round match against Fulbourn.
Anne Chambers (12), with her fantastic hand to eye co-ordination, returned shot after shot at high velocity and Fred Laband (11) displayed inexhaustible energy to chase every ball down.
The Fulbourn trio of Jannek Hauser (five), David Lam (nine) and Richard Hatley (nine) faced the challenge with no little anxiety, but prevailed in the end.
Chambers deserved her win against Lam, a reward for her constant concentration, but it was to be Ely’s only success.
Soham Comrades V entertained Ely V and showed no mercy, thrashing the visitors 5-0.
Nicky Rule (17), Chris Rule (15) and Lito Jumilla (15) were too consistent for Simon Braschi (17), John Dyal (22) and Simon Bickers (18).
Meanwhile, Fulbourn III went down to Elsworth.
