A champion gymnast paid a special visit to Soham on Monday for the official opening of the town’s new primary school.
All Ireland National Champion Luke Carson, who is in training for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and 2016 Olympics, was on hand to cut the ribbon at the grand opening of The Shade Primary School.
The school accepted its first pupils in September, to a temporary building at The Weatheralls Primary School, before moving into its new building in The Shade earlier this month.
On Monday, parents, governors and members of the Staploe Education Trust, which runs the school in partnership with Kennett Primary School and Soham Village College, were invited to the opening.
A choir of schoolchildren sang songs and there were performances from an orchestra made up of youngsters from schools across East Anglia.
Headteacher Lisa Gregory said: “The idea was to show the partnership between the primary and secondary schools. We wanted the younger children to be inspired by the older children and to see how we can learn from each other.
“We had a really positive response from everyone involved and parents were very happy to see their children on stage. It was a really lovely event.”
She added: “It has been a very smooth transition from our temporary accommodation to the new school. The children have settled very well and are very excited about the new building.”
The second phase of the development will start in 2017, when six more classrooms will be built, along with a computer suite, to allow for the school to become a two-form entry primary school.
