Staff and customers of the Costcutter store in in Newmarket’s Exning Road had bid a fond farewell to much loved shop assistant Pat Hewitt.

Mrs Hewitt, pictured here with assistants Kate Tierney and Sue Lane, and shop owner Raj Mahil had worked in the shop for seven years and retired just before Christmas.

Customers and staff made her last day a memorable one, showering her with gifts included flowers, chocolates and bottles of her favourite tipple, Baileys.

“Everybody loved Pat,” said Mrs Mahil. “She had lived in the town all her life and knows a lot of people. She has a lovely nature and was always so kind to customers which is why they all thought so much of her. We are all very sorry to see her go but I am sure she will op in now and gain to see us.”
