Users of rented garages in Mildenhall feared they were driving over asbestos after Storm Doris damaged corrugated roofing, but say they could not get it cleared up.

After Doris struck on February 23, Colin Purdew, who rents a garage in Plumpton Avenue from Flagship Housing assumed it would soon be cleared up.

Mr Purdew said: “I first reported the matter to Flagship Housing, when they did nothing about it I reported it to Forest Heath as a health and safety matter.”

Marie-Claire Delbrouque, director of housing and customer insight at flagship, said on Wednesday: “We take reports of potential asbestos presence incredibly seriously and would like to thank Mr Purdew for bringing this to our attention.

“We apologise for not dealing with his enquiry sooner, but can reassure the local community that all of the asbestos material has now been removed. A full internal investigation is now underway to establish exactly what happened.”
