Plans for a new cafe to be built in Mildenhall have been given the go-ahead by district planning officials eight months after they were first submitted.
Proposals put forward by the owners of the Corner Stores,in Brandon Road, to add an extension for a cafe on to the existing shop were handed the green light by the planning team at Forest Heath District Council earlier this month.
“It has taken longer than we expected to come through, but we are happy it has finally been passed,” said Colin Warren, joint-owner.
“Although we serve hot food on the premises we thought that building a cafe seemed a good idea as there is nothing like this in this part of town.”
Under the plans the shop, which has belonged to the Warren family since 1987, will almost double its current size to accommodate the new cafe.
To help ease any potential parking issues the cafe may bring with it, five new parking spaces will also be created outside the shop.
New jobs are also set to be created as a result of the expansion with the shop taking on one new full-time member of staff and several part-time employees.
“Since we have only just had the planning permission passed, it is still very much a work in progress,” said Mr Warren.
“The cafe will include a seated area, while we will also be building a new set of customer toilets which is a first for the shop.
“The next step now is to speak to the bank and get the money for the project as we didn’t want to do that without the planning permission.
“Hopefully we will begin the building work next year.”
