Nine strong field set to line up in this year’s Town Plate

A field of nine will go to post for this year’s Newmarket Town Plate on Saturday.

The three and three-quarter mile race, which was founded in the 17th century by King Charles II and is only open to amateur riders, will take place at 1pm prior to action getting underway at the town’s July Course.

Among the entries going for glory is Jeremy Zielinski, marketing and trading manager of Newmarket based charity the Injured Jockeys’ Fund.

Mr Zielinski will partner the Denis Quinn trained 10 year old Iceman George, a winner both on the flat and over hurdles.

“Iceman George is not Frankel, but he is a very nice horse who shows a lot of kindness and we will be trying to win,” said Mr Zielinski.

Following the completion of the seven-race card singer Peter Andre will take to the stage for the second, and concluding, Summer Saturday Live event.

Racing will also take place at the track tomorrow. Theseven-race card, which also includes music from bands The Peas, Sara Ashley, Dawson, Anto Morra and Tom Fairburn Duo, will start at 2.10pm.
