Soham’s newest primary school, which opened its doors just over three months ago, welcomed its first pre-school pupils on Monday.
The new pre-school at The Shade primary school caters for 21 three and four year old children and is open for 15 hours a week, from 9am until noon. Two new members of staff have been hired.
As well as shared facilities with the primary school, the youngsters have exclusive use of an interactive TV, a kitchen where staff can prepare them healthy snacks and a large open plan classroom.
“We just thought as we are a new school it would be good to try some new technology,” said headteacher Lisa Gregory. “The children are very lucky that it is a big, open and spacious school and it is all new. All the resources, the toys and the games which is lovely,” said Miss Gregory, who is also headteacher at Kennett Primary School.
The main school opened in September, when it accepted its first pupils into a temporary building at The Weatheralls Primary School in Pratt Street, and moved to a new building in The Shade in January. It is run by the Staploe Education Trust.
“I am really excited, the pre-school is going to help us build a school community,” said Miss Gregory.
“It would be really good to get the children and the parents involved in the school by having an open door policy where parents can come and talk to us.”
Miss Gregory said future plans include giving parents use of the library in out-of-school hours, running after school classes for the children, using the building for community classes such as aerobics and informing parents about their children’s learning on a weekly basis.
