Some of the most influential organisations in Newmarket have joined forces to launch a new community project aimed at attracting thousands more visitors to the town and boosting its economy.
Those with a stake in Discover Newmarket include Newmarket Racecourses, Jockey Club Estates, Jockey Club Rooms, The National Stud, Tattersalls, National Horseracing Museum, Darley based at Dalham Hall Stud,and the Animal Health Trust as well as the Bedford Lodge, Heath Court and Paddocks Hotel.
The project also has the backing of the town’s Retailers’ Association which unveiled its plan to bring a horserace to the High Street in the form of specially designed scupltures, at the initiative’s launch at the Jockey Club on Thursday.
“We have not been quite so good in the past about telling people outside Newmarket what we have to offer,” said Newmarket mayor Cllr Rachel Hood at the launch, “but we have a wonderful story to tell.”
Noel Byrne, chairman of Discover Newmarket and chief executive of the Bedford Lodge Hotel, said the new venture was a “community interest “ project operating for the good of the town and the local area,to promote tourism in West Suffolk.
“The target is to attract many more people to Newmarket to see and enjoy what the racing community has to offer. Every penny of profits from Discover Newmarket will be reinvested, for the benefit of the town and the local area. These are exciting times and we believe that we can achieve a great deal for Newmarket by working collaboratively for the good of all.,” he said.
Financially the project has been backed by its stakeholders with support British Horseracing Authority Grant Scheme, Newmarket Town Council and Forest Heath District Council. From January 1, all the individual organisations which ran their own tours will hand over to Discover Newmarket to sell and run tours on their behalf for the benefit of Newmarket. Discover Newmarket is also working with the Chamber of Commerce and Local Enterprise Partnerships, and is involved with the drive towards creating Newmarket as a BID town (Business Improvement District). to support the desire for economic growth in many areas of the town.
