It was the end of an era for the former Newmarket WI Market, re-named the Country Market , when it closed its doors just before Christmas.
Founded 35 years ago when it was based at the Turner Hall, the market has in recent years had found it increasingly difficult to attract new customers because of competition from supermarkets.
One of the organisers, Christine Scotchmere, said: “It is sad. I have been involved with this market for over 27 years and have enjoyed chatting to the customers, who enjoyed the personal touch, the home made cakes, jams, and baby knitted items. We are all very sorry to have come to this situation and thank all our regular customers for their support.”
