Marathon stayers are charity’s favourites

Classic winning trainer Paul D’Arcy is heading up a team of five runners from Newmarket taking part in Sunday’s London Marathon for town-based charity Racing Welfare.

He is joined by vet Sophie Ignarski, Jason Favell, pupil assistant to trainer William Haggas, Hayley Burton, pupil assistant to trainer Luca Cumani and Bethan Pritchard who recently moved to the town having been travelling head lad for trainer David O’Meara.

The Newmarket team is among 14 runners, representing the racing industry and running for the charity. Last year the Racing Welfare marathon team raised over £200,000 thanks to the participation of Qatar Racing. However, their fundraising efforts have been superb so far – the 14 runners have raised over £20,000 so far which has smashed their overall target with Paul D’Arcy raising more than £4,000.

“When I first started in racing I benefited from living in Racing Welfare housing. I’d now like to be able to give something back.” said team member Jason Favell.
