A local ballet school is celebrating after one of its pupils landed a major role in the UK national tour of The Sound of Music.
Seven-year-old Lydia Ward went through six intensive rounds of auditions over the past month before being offered the six month contract to play Gretel, one of the von Trapp children in the well-known story.
After rehearsals next month, Lydia, who lives in Swaffham Prior, will be joining the show when it starts the next leg of the UK tour in Ireland in August and will then continue in various theatres around the country until January.
Lydia dances three days a week at the Samara Ballet School’s branches in Burwell, Wicken and Downham Market and last year was chosen as the recipient of the Samara Scholarship from the school’s 300 pupils throughout Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. School principal, Michelle Rasdall, said “We are so proud of what Lydia has achieved for one so young. She is a very talented singer and dancer who started dancing with us before she was two. Our scholarships allow gifted children from all backgrounds to access ballet, tap, modern and theatre craft regardless of financial means and Lydia has yet again proved how successful the scholarships can be.”
