Work has begun on a £550,000 refurbishment scheme at one of the busiest sports and social clubs in Newmarket.

On Monday, builders moved into the site of the New Astley Club to start removing both external and internal walls at the club in order for the new changes to take place.

“It is very exciting to have the building work started as the project has been two years in the planning,” said Matt Mancini, the club’s community development director.

“To see things start to move along is great as the vision is now becoming a reality.”

Funding for the project, which will see the club change its name to the Racing Centre, has largely come from racing trusts the Racing Foundation, the Moller Trust and the Childwick Trust.

Internet betting firm Betfair have also supported the project by pledging cash to the centre’s new Race Fit gym.

Also set to be included in the scheme is a new office for the National Association of Stable Staff (NASS).

The work is expected to be completed by July.
