A team of volunteers who could mean the difference between life and death went on call for the first time on Saturday.

The seven-strong Wickhambrook First Responders Group is operating under the auspices of the ambulance service with volunteers called out as the first line of emergency care while paramedics and ambulance staff are on their way. The group’s coordinator, Peter Vince said there were 37 local incidents last year at which they could have provided assistance. Since the group was formed last autumn it has recruited volunteers from Wickhambrook, Ousden and Chedburgh and been fundraising and undertaking training.

By early next month around 12 people will be trained and two sets of kit, including two

defibrillators purchased. One has been bought by local county councillor, Mary Evans. “I very willingly agreed to give the group about £1,150 out of my locality budget,” she said. “I want to congratulate them for their energy and enthusiasm in getting this group up and running so quickly,” For more information contact Peter Vince on wickhambrookcfr@gmail.com
