Two men stole purse from Newmarket home of elderly victim
Police are warning residents about distraction burglaries after two men stole a purse from an elderly Newmarket victim while pretending to fix the boiler.
The incident happened at a property in Rowley Court on Wednesday between 11.30am and noon.
The elderly victim answered the door to two men claiming they had come to fix the boiler.
A ladies purse containing cash was stolen from the premises.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has knowledge of it should contact DC Craig Brett at Bury St Edmunds CID on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Police have issued the following advice:
- Householders should be especially wary of anyone turning up on their doorstep unannounced, who cannot provide credible identity documents.
- Utility workers usually make an appointment and do not operate by trying to gain access to your home.
- Members of the public who have an elderly or vulnerable neighbour or relative should be vigilant.
- Always ask for identification from any unexpected callers and do not to let anyone in if you are not comfortable with who they are.
- Councils and utilities companies will generally contact householders by telephone or letter if they plan to carry out repairs rather than make unsolicited calls.
- Please report anything suspicious as soon as possible.
