Newmarket’s racing community has been mourning the death of trainer John Hills who died on Sunday aged 53 just months after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Mr Hills trained in Lambourn but was born in Newmarket, the eldest son of trainer, Barry Hills, and his first wife, former town and district councillor, Maureen, who still lives in Noel Murless Drive. Two of his brothers, twins Michael and Richard, both former top jockeys also live in the Newmarket area. He grew up in the town and rode his first winner as an amateur rider in the 1976 Town Plate. He also worked as an assistant to the late town trainer, Tom Jones, before he started training in 1987.

β€œHe will be so badly missed by us all, most of all by our mum,” said Richard, and Michael added: β€œI am proud to be his brother. He loved life and life loved him.”

The funeral service will be held at Lambourn parish church on Wednesday at 2pm.
