Town set to get new police station
Newmarket is to get a new police station.
The town’s police chief, Inspector Matthew Rose revealed on Monday that the new police base will be in a Suffolk County Council-owned building at Foley House in Wellington Street, once used as a youth centre.
The centre was closed in January 2011 and the building, which has also been used in the past as a polling station, is derelict.
Insp Rose told town councillors on Monday: “We have secured a deal to use the building at Foley House, which is currently in disrepair and that will be the new Newmarket Police Station. I am happy that it is sufficient for our needs in Newmarket.”
He said the new station would have a front desk with similar opening times to the current station in Vicarage Road and would be a base for the Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT).
Two years ago the Journal revealed that Suffolk Police intended to close the Vicarage Road station, which had been home to the town’s police force for more than 100 years, after it was decided it was too large and no longer “fit for purpose”.
The old station adjoined the town’s court house, which had already been closed, and there was no longer any need for cells to hold prisoners as a new custody suite had been opened in Bury St Edmunds.
