Town school told it must improve

The quality of teaching at a Newmarket primary school must improve, according to government inspectors.

Paddocks Primary School in Rochfort Avenue was told teaching was inconsistent and that pupils in Years 3 and 4 had not made the progress they should in reading, writing and mathematics following a visit by Ofsted inspectors last month.

The school received the same level of rating - grade three of four – at its last inspection but this has now been re-classified from “satisfactory” to “requires improvement”.

In his report, lead inspector Robert Greatrex said the school needed to improve the quality of its teaching to make sure that what pupils have to learn is “always clear and precise so that they know what they are expected to achieve”.

He said that by the end of Year 2 pupils had achieved above average standards in reading, writing and maths, due largely to “consistently good teaching” in the first three years but over the last few years, progress had slowed in Years 3 and leaving attainment below the county average for primary schools by the end of Year 4.

“The quality of teaching seen during the inspection varied from inadequate to outstanding,” said the report. “Overall three-quarters of teaching is good or better, an improvement since the last inspection.”

He said school leaders had tackled some underperformance but more remained to be done.

There was praise for the school’s 191 pupils whose behaviour was said to be “generally outstanding” which made a “very positive contribution to their learning”.

“Paddocks is a very harmonious community with a real family feel because all staff, and pupils alike, show respect for one another,” said the report. “Pupils enjoy working together; they listen to each other’s views, respond to them and take pride in each other’s achievements.”
