Town puts on carnival to remember
HUNDREDS of Soham residents turned out to celebrate the town's annual carnival on Monday.
The sun shone as people lined the streets to watch the parade of floats led by carnival princess Rebecca Baynham and attendants Izabell Avey-Walters and Tanisha Bird in an open-top sports car.
Six decorated floats made their way to the recreation ground where world indoor bowling champion Greg Harlow presented trophies to the winners of the best float competition.
St Andrew's Primary School took the top prize for its Pinafore Pirates float with second place going to The
Weatheralls Primary School with a Once Upon a Time theme.
Soham St John Youth took third prize with their entry Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
The Townsperson of the Year award went to Soham street cleaner Chris Burgess.
"I am over the moon," he said.
"I will never forget this day and I really hope that next year's person will be as pleased as I am."
Numerous organisations ran stalls on the day, including Soham Community History Museum, Soham Twinning Association, St Andrew's Church and First Soham Brownies.
Other activities at the event were performances by Soham Fenlander Majorettes, children's races, terrier racing, a classic vehicle and tractor display and fairground rides and games.
The heavy horse show ran alongside the carnival throughout the morning.
Kim Botting, chairman of the Soham Carnival committee, said he was very pleased with the day.
"I think it went well and the weather was on our side," he said.
"We had a really good turnout. The streets were quite well packed and it was better than I thought it would be."
