Newmarket MP Matt Hancock was at the Newmarket branch of Yorkshire Building Society to help it give away £1,000 to local charities.

He was kick-starting a campaign to help good causes by inviting members of the public to call into the branch to vote for their favourite of three charities to decide how the money should be split.

The charities in line for a cash boost were Newmarket Day Centre, Jillian Raymond Group Riding for the Disabled and The Voluntary Network. Mr Hancock, pictured, cast the first vote. The campaign will run for two weeks and the winner, who will receive £500, will be decided tomorrow.
