Town monument set to get £3,500
ONE of Newmarket's most prominent monuments could be set for a £3,500 refurbishment grant from the town council.
For 100 years the Cooper Memorial has stood on Cambridge Road as a landmark to one of Newmarket's most popular sporting aristocrats, Australianborn businessman, Sir Daniel Cooper.
It was built by his wife Lady Harriet, as the ultimate tribute to her loving husband, a year after
Sir Daniel died in 1909, aged 60.
Now, 100 years later Newmarket town councillors discussed on Monday night whether they could pay for restoration by stonemasonry specialists Rattee & Kett.
The work would pay for the monument to be professionally cleaned, re-pointed and biocidetreated.
Cllr Glen Edge told the community services committee that he felt the monument should be restored because it was the gateway of Newmarket.
"If it could be cleaned and repointed that would suffice," Cllr Edge said.
Although the committee has proposed to fund the work, it will now go to full council for final approval.
When Lady Harriet decided to dedicate the monument to her husband she realised she could see Cambridge Road from the family home, Warren Towers, on Warren Hill.
The Cooper Memorial was designed by architect E A Rickards, sculpted by H Poole and constructed by London-based stonemasons, White and Sons.
Their names are all inscribed on it.
Sir Daniel, who died at his second home in London, was brought by special train back to Newmarket and his ashes are interred at Newmarket cemetery, just a stone's throw from the imposing monument which bears his name.
A famous Newmarket resident, member of the jockey club, Rous Memorial Hospital committee member, recognised yachtsman who sailed with the Royal Yacht Squadron, he also had several horses in training
with Mat Dawson.
