Town cemetery thieves ‘have no scruples’ - clerk
Newmarket Town maintenance operatives Keith Rivett and Debbie Kay with all that is left of the water bowser that was stolen from Newmarket Cemetary.
A council clerk has slammed thieves who raided Newmarket’s cemetery twice in the space of a week.
In the latest incident, a water bowser used to maintain the town’s hanging baskets was stolen from the cemetery in the High Street between 4pm on Wednesday and 9am the following day.
The culprits cut the lock on the cemetery gates before removing the clamp and hitch-lock the bowser, worth about £3,000, was secured with.
The raid came just over a week after other items were snatched from the cemetery sometime between Tuesday, February 19, and Thursday, February 21.
On that occasion a water pump and hose pipe, together worth about £450, were taken.
Isabelle Barrett, clerk at Newmarket Town Council, said: “I think it’s awful and sad that someone actually targeted our cemetery.
“You would think things would be safe up there, so for someone to go to the trouble of breaking the locks on the cemetery gates and steal those things is appalling. The people who did this have no scruples.”
