Sheikh Hamdan al Maktoum has a worldwide reputation as one of the most successful owners and breeders of racehorses, but last week his Shadwell Estate Company’s pedigree Aberdeen Angus herd took one of the most prestigious and coveted awards available to pedigree beef cattle breeders when it won the overall championship at the Aberdeen Angus Society’s official premier sale.

Stock manager Robert Clarke, who manages the 80-strong herd, travelled up to Stirling in Scotland with a team of three bulls, including the September 2011-born Shadwell Excalibur, a son of the herd’s stock bull, Netherallan Peter Pershore, bought privately from the Massie family’s successful Aberdeenshire-based Blelack herd.

Speaking about the herd’s success, Shadwell Estate stud director Richard Lancaster said: “The Shadwell herd has invested heavily in the breed, having purchased some of the breed’s finest female genetics, both at society sales, and privately from high profile established breeders, so it was a fabulous achievement to take a home-bred bull to this prestigious event and take the overall championship.”

After the show, Excalibur went through the sale ring, selling for 7,000 guineas to J Walker and Sons, and will run in their commercial beef suckler herd.
