As the country commemorated Britain’s entry into the First World War 100 years ago, members of the town’s local history society launched an exhibition at the library detailing how the conflict affected Newmarket.

Tuesday also saw the launch of a book by society member Tony Pringle called Newmarket Remembers in which he has researched the stories of all those who died in the conflict.

“Every year I read their names on the war memorial but I realised I knew little else about any of them,” said Tony. Helped by local branches of the Royal British Legion and the Newmarket Journal archive, his record has now been published and is available from the library or from newmarket-remembers.info
