The manager of a vandalised Newmarket takeaway has thanked residents for their support in helping to clean up the damage.

Jay Chowdhury said he was “horrified” to discover the front window of Cinnamon Indian Takeaway had been sprayed with a red swastika design and a racial slur.

The incident was reported to police at about 1.35pm on Saturday, January 12, but no arrests have yet been made.

Mr Chowdhury said he was grateful for the support he received from members of the public, who helped wash the window clean of the graffiti.

“I am thankful for all the support that we generated,” he said. “Some people helped to wash the windows and clear off the graffiti and have been trying to help the police identify the people who did this. We are very thankful for what they have done.”

He said the damage was a “real shock” to staff at the Wellington Street takeaway, which opened in the town just six weeks ago.

Mr Chowdhury said: “My family has been in this country for generations and I haven’t seen anything like this, so it was a surprise to me to see the word and the swastika sign on the window.

“I can’t figure out what is going on because this is not normal behaviour. People don’t use these kind of graffiti marks, especially in Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.

“I have got relatives around Suffolk and Norfolk with businesses across East Anglia and we’ve never had anything like this before in 40 years. It was horrific to get up in the morning and see that.”

A pillar near to the back entrance of TK Maxx in Newmarket was also vandalised with a red swastika design, but police said the incident had not been reported to them.

Mr Chowdhury said: “We are still trying to find out who is responsible, whether it’s a local person or someone coming from a different area. The police are on the case.”
