Take the Plunge for new school pool

PARENTS will meet at Soham's St Andrew's Primary School next month to discuss building a new swimming pool for the school.

School governors are hoping to raise funds for a new pool because the current structure, which is more than 20 years old, is rotting.

The project could cost up to 50,000, but the school's governors are hoping parents and town residents will get involved, providing labour and other skills to help with the rebuild.

St Andrew's Primary School governor, and chairman of the premises committee, Peter Palmer, told the Journal that the new pool will be made of concrete and could have a roof.

"This would be a lot better value for money, as it could be used between May and October," Mr Palmer said.

"At the moment it would probably be wrong to quote figures (for the cost of refurbishment] until we get a quote.

"It could cost anywhere between 17,000 and 50,000, but a ball-park figure could be around 35,000.

"What we want to do now is to get parents on board, anybody with labour skills such as heating and building skills, and any generous benefactors.

"We are looking for help from the local community. Times are difficult financially but every little helps."

Mr Palmer said that the school might look at applying for a number of grants to cover the repair costs.

He said that if funds were raised as quickly as possible, work could be completed by next summer.

Parents are being invited to attend next month's meeting, which will be at 7.30pm at St Andrew's Primary School on September 23, and will include discussions about fundraising ideas.

The current swimming pool was installed at St Andrews Primary School in 1990 when the school opened, when the structure was taken from another school in the area.
