Table-toppers turn up heat

NEWMARKET stormed to the top of the Cambridgeshire League with a four-set victory over Werrington.

Although Werrington started the first set strongly and eased into a 10-3 lead, Newmarket finally got going to make it close, but lost 26-24.

The second set started much differently, as the Newmarket block stole the show — Kenneth Novak, Stevie Watts and Rob Dovaston were in an uncompromising mood.

When the Werrington attackers changed tack and dumped the ball over the block, superb court coverage by Peter Storm and Ryan Graver rescued the ball from almost impossible positions. The set was taken at a canter, 25-17.

The third set saw more of the same as Watts went on a superb run of serves.

Using his experience, he combined spin and placement, and helped to log 12 points in a row. Saunders was also on top form as Newmarket won the set 25-15.

Newmarket were certainly no longer in charitable mood. The Werrington setter tired and this allowed Weglowski to cement the player-of-the match award, just edging out Dovaston with another run of blocks.

The Storm serve had by now run out of puff, but Watts killed the game off with a monster spike to haul Newmarket to the top of the league. Set score 25-16.

Newmarket Volleyball Club have a momentous weekend of volleyball coming up.

On Saturday (5.30pm) they host Division One Dewsbury for a place in the National Shield semi-finals, and then on Sunday (11.30am) host Southampton in a promotion decider.

Entrance at Newmarket Leisure Centre is free.
