Swine flu shuts Burwell school

BURWELL Village College Primary School has closed after three pupils contracted swine flu and fears are growing that there may be more cases.

Headteacher Nicholas Smith said he was forced to shut the school for a week on the advice of the Health Protection Agency (HPA)..

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire County Council confirmed that the decision to close the school was taken yesterday at 6.30pm after its 427 pupils had gone home.

One child at the primary school was confirmed as suffering from swine flu on Tuesday. Last night, the Health Protection Agency said two more had the illness.

All three affected are in Year 4 but a sibling of one pupil, in Year 2, is also understood to be showing symptoms.

Parents have been told not to take their children to the school, which is expected to re-open on June 25.

The decision to close the school also affects Burwell Early Learners and the Willows wraparound care service, which are both on the site, as well as community and sports groups which meet at the school.

Updates will be put on the school answerphone.and homework for all children will be put on the school's website - www.burwellvillage.cambs.sch.uk

The advice to anyone with flu-like symptoms is to stay at home and contact their doctor.
