Stables project reveals window to the past
Palace House, Newmarket.
A historic landmark is revealing some of its secrets as the project to create a Home of Horseracing National Heritage Centre in Newmarket gets under way.
The spine wall of the Trainer’s House at Palace House Stables has been uncovered to reveal a number of windows that were bricked up when the building was extended. Research is now set to establish which period they belong to and if they could originally have been designed by renowned architect, Inigo Jones.
Forest Heath District Council is a major partner in the £15 million project and councillors were delighted to be shown the heritage finds by National Horseracing Museum director Chris Garibaldi.
The finished project will provide a new home for the museum as well as a base for the Retraining of Racehorses charity.
“It is fascinating to glimpse what the building must have been like in a past life. The cornerstones indicate that the windows must have been quite large, looking out to the area behind,” said Cllr Warwick Hirst, cabinet member responsible for the project.
Council Leader Cllr James Waters added: “The council is delighted to be supporting the project, not only with £1.3 million of direct funding, but also by leasing the site to the museum.
