Soham stop slump in style

NEWMARKET AND

DISTRICT LEAGUE

Cambridge SC 0 Soham B 5

SOHAM B returned to winning ways after recent back-to-back defeats by cruising to a whitewash at Cambridge Snooker Centre.

Ashley Gilbert opened the away side’s account with a confident potting display to outpoint Nosh Lemmon 45-26.

Karl Bursford made amends for last week’s loss with a 100-87 victory over Tony Carr to give the away team another point.

Soham captain Dan Stoodley made light work of Ben Clements, sealing a much-needed victory for his team with some skilful potting and mature safety play, taking the frame 54-17.

Jordan Lemmon faced Steve Kerr in the fourth frame and the youngster was overpowered by Kerr, who secured the frame with a 53 break, 150-36.

Joey Wong tried to tame a resurgent Paul Jefferies in the final frame, with Jefferies calling on all of his experience and quality to overcome the youngster and ease to victory, 60-42, securing a classy 5-0 win for Soham B.

Soham A 4 Cheveley Road B 1

IN THE opening snooker game, Cheveley youngster Jordan Sharpe had the task of taming in-form Ali Mclean but despite several great shots it was Mclean who ran out a 59-28 winner.

In the billiards game that followed, Darren Bettney was in great form with breaks of 28 and 24 and charged into a big lead.

His opponent Chris Blease hit back with a 21, but could not stop Bettney winning 100-78.

Kevin Peacock was also firing on all cylinders, making short work of Andy Powers 77-46 to make it 2-1 to the home side.

The last billiards game was tightly contested between Richard Badcock and Cheveley’s Paul Sharpe. With decades of experience, Badcock eventually ran out 100-89, winning game and match for Soham.

Colin Johnson hit a 28 in the last to defeat Terry Wright 64-19.

Mildenhall SC 3 Cheveley RBL 2

MILDENHALL’S Andy Isaacson, who has been a revelation this season, was again in top form with a fine opening win against Dale Jeffery, 60-36.

Richard Lyes doubled Mildenhall’s lead, eventually outpointing Ian Starling 100-87.

With backs now firmly against the wall, the Legion side hit back when Dave Rabbeth grabbed a tight game, 35-25 against Trevor Pauley.

Mark Avison made it 2-2 by defeating Alan Benton in the last billiards game, 100-71, to set up a last frame decider.

In the final frame, Mildenhall’s Karl Hills was too strong for Cheveley’s captain Dave Ingham, potting several stunning balls to win 61-23 and take the match.

Cheveley Road A 2 Fordham RBL 3

THE league leaders were pushed all the way by a strong Cheveley challenge.

In the opening snooker game, Graham Arnold played a good game against the home side’s Tom Campbell, winning 51-27.

Veteran Larry Wargen was in top form in the next, knocking in breaks of 27 and 25 against Jason Theobald — who had a 22 himself — on his way to a 100-72 victory.

Cheveley’s Andy Dawson gave his side a 2-1 advantage, beating Darren Theobald 64-46.

Fordham’s captain John Whitwood had to dig deep to hold off Bob Neave in the second billiards game, eventually winning 100-95 to tie the match overall at 2-2.

The decider between Joe Parr and Steve Palmer was a tight safety-orientated frame with Palmer triumphing by potting the pink in the middle for the match.
