Soham rotarians help Pakistan's flood victims
ROTARIANS in Soham have raised more than £500 to help flood victims in Pakistan after generous shoppers dropped their spare change into collection boxes.
About 540 was raised from two Rotary Club collections held over two Saturdays at the Soham branch of Budgens.
Budgens owner Jonathan James gave permission for members to collect at the shop after the Rotarians had decided to help flood victims, following a meeting on August 18.
"It was such a rush that we didn't have any coin bags but the Cambridge Building Society came up with the goods," said Rotary chairman Geoff Griggs.
"The money will be forwarded to the Rotary International account so all of it will get to Pakistan with no expenses syphoned off.
"Thanks to everyone involved but especially the generous people of Soham."
The UN says Pakistan's worst flooding in nearly a century has now affected more than four million people and left at least 1,600 dead.
The floods struck at the end of July following monsoon rains in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, lower Punjab and Balochistan regions of Pakistan.
