YOUNGSTERS in Burwell were given a taste of slum life to help raise more than £1,000 for charity.

A group of 21 young people from Burwell Baptist Church, RE:NEW and St Mary’s Church took part in the Slum Survivor challenge in April.

The weekend event gave young people a chance to build and live in their own slum houses, which were built from basic, discarded materials.

During the event they had a limited diet and faced restrictions on the clothing and personal items they could bring.

They also competed in challenges that simulated aspects of slum life.

The group raised a total of £1,006.02 for Soul Action, a charity that works to help people who have been affected by injustice and poverty.

Youngsters presented a cheque to Zoe Hayes, youth relationship officer at Soul Action, at Trinity Church in High Street, Burwell, on Tuesday, September 13.
