Seven fight vacant town council seats

ELECTIONS will be held later this month to fill seats on Newmarket Town Council left vacant by the resignation of two councillors.

In July former town mayor Jane Bailey who had represented St Mary's ward and Bob Cole, who represented Studlands Park both quit the authority.

Neither would elaborate on the reasons why they had decided to resign but their decisions were believed to have been linked to the non-appearance of another councillor, Jonathan Richer, at meetings for more than a year.

The four candidates fighting the St Mary's seat include Jacko Fanshawe, wife of Newmarket trainer James Fanshawe, who is a leading member of the Save Historic Newmarket Action Group and is standing as an independent.

Also standing are Forest Heath district independent councillor Andrew Appleby, who stood in the recent Parliamentary elections, Conservative candidate Janet Clarke, partner of current town and county councillor Bill Sadler, and Sean Perry whose nomination has been proposed by current town mayor Cllr Mick Jefferys.

In the Studlands Park ward, there are three candidates seeking election.

Standing as an independent is Larry Kirwin, owner of Tic Toc Coffee in Newmarket, formerly the Clock Tower Cafe, who in the past has been a fierce critic of the town council's policy to clear the High Street of A boards and street furniture put in place without planning permission.

Against him are Hilda Halliwell, standing with no political allegiance who was a previous member of the town council between 1999 and 2003.

She is currently one of the organisers of Cinema in Newmarket.

The Conservative candidate is Michael Anderson.

Polling stations will be set up in both wards and the elections will be held on Thursday, September 23.

The successful candidates will have just six months in office before the whole council is up for re-election in May of next year when there will also be district council elections.
