Second crossing a 'ridiculous idea'

COUNCILLORS have objected to plans to build a new zebra crossing in Mildenhall less than 50 yards from an existing one.

At Thursday's Mildenhall Parish Council meeting, councillors voiced their concerns over proposals by Suffolk County Council to introduce a crossing at the top of St Andrew's Street, near Sainsbury's, just yards away from one outside the bus station on King Street.

Cllr Gerald Taylor Balls, said: "I think it's a ridiculous idea to have two crossings so close to each other at a point where there will be a lot more traffic once work on the new Sainsbury's gets under way.

"Cars already have problems as the existing crossing is too close to the Recreation Way junction."

Cllr George Hayes added: "I don't see the point of putting another one so close to the existing crossing."

Instead of building a new crossing, members suggested putting up railings close to the King Street crossing to encourage more people to use it.

Cllr Adrian Peachey said: "If railings were put up, more people would have to walk to the crossing rather than crossing the road a bit further up.

"It's a wonder there has not been an accident there yet with people crossing the road away from the crossing."

The majority of councillors were, however, in favour of the county council's plans to build a new zebra crossing on Recreation Way.

Cllr Mike Ball said: "The extra crossing on Recreation Way is a good idea. Not only will it get used now, but once the new Sainsbury's is complete it will be used even more still."

The parish council's response will now be sent to the county council before a final decision on the plan will be made later this year.

Sandra Graffham, spokeswoman for Suffolk County Council, said: "We are still consulting on the zebra crossings and will consider all views before agreeing to the arrangements on the highway."
