Scheme looks for sponsors

Sponsors are being sought for a new project aimed at brightening up Newmarket High Street.

Heading for Newmarket will see colourful horses’ heads on lamp posts along the town’s High Street.

The first sponsor is 83-year-old Harvey Hofman, of Brookfields Close, who contacted the town council with the idea after he had seen a similar scheme when he visited Meiningen in Germany and thought it would look good in Newmarket.

Town councillor Joy Uney, who was the driving force behind the successful Horse About Newmarket project two years ago, has already secured £3,000 of funding thanks to donations of £600 from Suffolk County Council and £2,400 from an anonymous donor.

Letters have now gone out to town traders asking them to sponsor heads which could be used to promote their businesses and school pupils have been asked to come up with designs for the horses’ heads, which will be made of by Chris Latta of Newmarket’s Icon Signs of diecut aluminium and attached to the lamp posts.

Anyone interested in supporting the project should contact Kay Dawson on 01638 667227.
