Rowdy yobs move on in car park

RESIDENTS living near a new car park in Mildenhall have already raised concerns about anti-social behaviour less than four weeks after it opened.

At Thursday's meeting of Mildenhall Parish Council Sergeant Phil Payne, of the Mildenhall Safer Neighbourhood Team, told councillors that his team had received a number of complaints regarding anti-social behaviour in the new town car park on the Jubilee Fields.

The 211-bay car park, which has been built behind the town's former car park on Recreation Way, was only opened to the public on July 17.

"We have had a number of complaints regarding youths making noise and being anti-social in the new car park," he said.

"As a result we are speaking to Forest Heath District Council to see how we can monitor this situation and how to control them.

"One option to stop it being turned into a racetrack is to introduce more speed bumps and that is something we are looking into."

Councillors also raised concerns regarding illegal parking outside Rumbles Fish and Chip Shop in the High Street, and outside the Mabbs Hall Care Home, which is often used by customers visiting the neighbouring Lloyds TSB.

Cllr Adrian Peachey said: " It has been going on for quite a while this parking outside Mabbs Hall and the problem is if you want to get an emergency vehicle up there it is not going to happen with cars parked blocking the drive way."

Sgt Payne added: "We have given out a number of tickets to those parking on the double yellow lines outside the new fish and chip shop and will continue to do so and have spoken to the owners regarding the issue. Mabbs Hall is something we will look into."

Despite the new car park opening, Sgt Payne revealed that the number of parking tickets issued across the town last month was still in the region of 100.

"There is plenty of free parking across the town and it is one of a very few number of towns that have this luxury.

"It would be nice if people were to use this as if they don't they will find it very expensive to park in town," added Sgt Payne.
