Restoration of pond sparks celebrations
VILLAGERS in Dullingham will be celebrating the restoration of their village pond on Sunday.
Led by the parish council and armed with 5,840 from the National LotteryFund's Breathing Places grant scheme, which is run in partnership with the BBC's Breathing Places campaign, an army of volunteers have transformed the pond.
As part of an environmental regeneration project, villagers have improved bio-diversity and introduced new wildlife habitats at the site through careful planting and the introduction of hedgehog domes, bird boxes and other features to attract and sustain wildlife.
Access has also been improved, especially for the young and less able visitors, and a tranquil setting restored near St Mary's Church, which dates back to the 12th Century.
At 11am on Sunday, Beth and Kim Waterhouse, longstanding members of the community, will unveil a commemorative plaque to get the celebrations started.
Events will include a nature trail and Easter egg hunt at 11.30 am, lambs on show on the village green, a fun dog show at 12.30 pm, a village photo exhibition and competition, pond-dipping, a host of children's activities, crucibles, a wood turning display, bee keeping demonstration and a cake stall and refreshments.
"All friends of Dullingham, past and present, are welcome along to join in," said village environmental group spokeswoman Maggie Carvalho.
"The transformation of this formerly neglected corner of the village to a centre of village life is entirely due to the efforts of local people and the help provided by the BBC Breathing Places campaign."
