Residents evacuated after explosion in Bottisham

Five people were treated for smoke inhalation and many others evacuated from their homes after a garage exploded in Beechwood Avenue, Bottisham, this morning.

Fire crews from Cambridge, Burwell and Newmarket and a water carrier dealt with the fire which wrecked at least three classic motorbikes and a Toyota MR2. They were being repaired by garage owner mobile mechanic Ian Baker, 61, who was not in the premises at the time of the explosion.

Residents of Queen’s Court care home, in Downing Court, close to the burning garage had to be moved to the other side of the building.

Mr Baker had been in the garage earlier this morning to take out two motorbikes, but was unsure what triggered the explosion.
