Red Arrows set to fly over Mildenhall
ONE of the world's most famous air display teams is set to fly over Mildenhall.
The Red Arrows will take to the skies on Saturday, August 15, as part of a series of events to mark the 75th anniversary of the Mildenhall to Melbourne air race on October 20.
The 1934 event, sponsored by Sir MacPherson Robertson, was set up to celebrate the centenary of Melbourne in the Australian state of Victoria.
It has been regarded as the single most important international event in the development of long-distance commercial travel.
On the day before the race, RAF Mildenhall played host to a number of royal figures, including King George V and Queen Mary as well as the then Prince of Wales.
Run as two races, on a handicap and speed basis, the first team to complete the 11,000 mile journey was Tom Campbell Black and Charles Scott, who finished the event in 70 hours 54 minutes and 18 seconds in their de Havilland DH88 Comet.
