Protesters make their feelings known

NINE out of ten people are against controversial plans to create an aircraft holding area above Newmarket, according to recent figures.

The National Air Traffic Services (Nats) announced on Tuesday that nearly 14,000 people – about 86 per cent of the responses from a recent consultation – were against the proposals.

Pressure groups from across the region have fiercely challenged the plans which they say could destroy peace and quiet in rural areas.

More than 70 people representing villages from across Suffolk marched in London last month to make sure their opinions were taken into consideration.

The House of Commons Transport Committee has announced it will lead an inquiry into airspace management after pressure from MPs Richard Spring, David Ruffley and Jim Paice.

"I greatly welcome the news of this inquiry," said Richard Spring MP for West Suffolk.

"It is an important opportunity for people to contribute their concerns about the impact that the proposed flight path changes will have on residents, both human and equine, in the Newmarket area.

"At stake is the future of the horseracing industry and all those people who live in the area."

Stud owners in Newmarket have expressed concern over the damage flight paths could have on the area's equine interests.

Bloodstock experts have raised concerns about breeders relocating if they thought their horses would be under threat from aircraft noise.

"We have had serious reservations about the way in which the whole consultation was conducted," said Carol Barbone, campaigning director from Stop the Stansted expansion.

"The news that the transport committee is to take a closer look, will come as good news to those who will be affected."

Jonathan Astill, Nats' head of airspace management said there had been many constructive suggestions received and that Nats would give them proper consideration.

"We will publish updates to this initial report when analysis is complete," he said.

"It may be that there are changes we can make to the design, and that could lead to further consultation with local communities."
