Pool fund hits £170k target
Campaigners who launched a fundraising drive to build a new swimming pool in Soham are celebrating after reaching their £170,000 target.
Their goal was hit last week when East Cambridgeshire District Council approved a £55,000 Section 106 grant towards the scheme.
The Soham Swimming Pool Partnership, made up of representatives from St Andrew’s Primary School and The Weatheralls Primary School, had already raised the majority of the cost of installing the pool after organising more than 60 fundraisers over the last two years.
Peter Palmer, chairman of the partnership, said securing the additional funds meant building work could start on the new pool at St Andrew’s in the next three months and pupils could be using it by September.
“We are delighted to announce that following the approval of a £55,000 Section 106 grant, as well as support from Cambridgeshire County Council together with the money that has already been pledged and raised from the local community, we have managed to reach the £170,000 target for the building of our new swimming pool.
“An enormous amount of effort has been put in by parents, staff and pupils to raise this amount of money in just over two years but we can now look forward to the prospect of a new, covered pool.
“We are currently reviewing the original tenders but if everything goes to plan we hope to start building in the next three months and swimming in the new pool by the start of September.”
Planning permission has already been granted for the swimming pool. It will replace St Andrew’s Primary School’s former pool, which was condemned in 2010.
